About Christmas 2018 - Jersey Christmas Jumpers

Christmas jumpers, with both novelty and traditional designs, have become an increasingly popular mainstay of the British Christmas tradition. Popularised by television personalities in the 1980s, they are now highly sought-after in the build up to Christmas, worn at home as well as at schools and workplaces, often on special ‘Christmas jumper days’.

Eight stamps have been designed with a knitted background effect and cut-out neckline to give the impression of a folded jumper when applied to an item of mail.

====================

The origins of the Christmas jumper can be traced back to the brilliantly distinctive nineteenth century Scandinavian fishermen sweaters. By the middle of the 20th Century, these sweaters were popularised by skiers, who needed appropriately warm skiwear. By the 1970s, the knitwear was associated with Christmas and since then, our love for the festive jumper has only increased as the look was brought into our homes by television personalities in the 1980s. Christmas jumpers, with both novelty and traditional designs, are now a must-have in the build up to Christmas. People wear them at home as well as at schools and workplaces, often on special 'Christmas jumper days'. Even the staff at Jersey Post wear Christmas jumpers in December as part of the festive celebrations and to raise money for local charities. The charitable practice of wearing Christmas jumpers is now commonplace around the world and the largest organised charity event is the Save The Children's Christmas Jumper Day which, in 2017, raised over £4million.
