"The production of warm and attractive woollens on the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha is a fine example of a traditional cottage industry.  Wool from the island's 1000 sheep is washed, picked, lightly-oiled and carded before being spun into hanks on hand-made spinning wheels.  The end products of a process that has changed little since the island was first settled in the early 19th century are expertly knitted socks, jerseys and other woolens."
