The Constitutional Status of the Islands:

It is with great pleasure that Nieuwe Post Nederlandse Antillen N.V. brings you this emission of stamps dedicated to the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10th, 2010. From this date, 10-10-10, the islands' constitutional status will be as follows: Curacao and Sint Maarten will be given the same status as the earlier breakway, Aruba (1986): autonomous countries within the Dutch Kingdom, alongside the Netherlands; while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (BES Islands), also known as the 'Caribisch Nederland', will be given a special community status within the Netherlands. Consequently, this would spell the disapperance of the central government of the Netherlands Antilles.

111 Cents - Curacao (Map, Flag and Coat of Arms)

Curacao is an islands in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. The island territory of Curacao, which includes the main island plus the small, uninhabited island of Klein Curacao ("Little Curacao") was part of the Netherlands Antilles. Its capital is Willemstad and has a land area of 444 square kilometers (171 square miles). As of 1 January 2009, it had a population of 141,766. Papiamentu, a mixture of Duthc, French, Spanish, Portugues and Creole is the native language; however Dutch, English and Spanish is also spoken on the island. Curacao has its own flag and coats of arm.

Situated about 150 miles east of Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten covers 16 square miles of the southern part of the island, an area marked by verdant, rolling hills that languidly rest above mile after mile of beach, salt pond, and lagoon. With an area of 37 square miles, the island of Sint Maarten/ Saint Martin is the smallest land mass in the world to be divided between two governments. Its dual owners are the Dutch and the French, who have shared the tiny and paradisiacal island more or less peacefully for almost 350 years. The island territories of the Netherlands Antilles. As of January 2009 it had a population of 50,300 inhabitants. The languages spoken in Sint Maarten are mainly English, Dutch, Papiamentu and French.

111 Cent - 'Caribisch Nederlands' / Caribbean Netherlands (Map, Flag and Coat of Arms)

The 'Caribisch Nederlands' (=Caribbean Netherlands), consists of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, also called the 'BES eilanden' (BES islands). Dutch, English and Papiamentu are the mainly spoken languages on the islands. On the stamp, at the upper right side, is also a potrait of Queen Beatrix of the Dutch Kingdom. 

Bonaire: Nestled in its western crescent, the island of Klein Bonaire is also part of the Lesser Antilles.

Bonaire and Klein Bonaire have a land area of 288 km (111 square miles) and 6 km (2.3 square miles) respectively. The estimated population was 14,006 inhabitants as of December, 2006 which gives Bonaire a population density of 49 inhabitants per km.

Sint Eustatius: also known to the locals as Statia, is located in the northern, Leeward Islands, portion of the West Indies, southeast of the Virgin Islands. Sint Eustatius is part of the inner arc of the Leeward Island chain, situated to the northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis and to the southeast of Saba. It has a land area of 21 km (8.1 square miles). In 2004 the population was estimated at 2,498 inhabitants.

Saba: The smallest island of the 'Caribbean Netherlands' consists largely of the potentially active volcano Mount Scenery (877 m) which is the highest point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Sana has a land area of 13 km (5 square miles). In 2004 the population was estimated at 1,424 inhabitants.

2.50 Rupees - Valar
Vallar is a tribal dance and is famous amongst Sirohi, Aabu, Pali tribals. This is also known in relation to ghumra. When ladies perform this dance there is no back ground music but when males come for it they have drum beats of dhol .Dhol is played in many different rhythms.

4.00 Rupees - Kayang
The Kayang Mala dance is one of the most popular dance in Himachal. In this, the dancers are dressed in their traditional finery, weave their arms together to form a sort of a criss cross pattern in order to appear like beads in a woven garland. They drink chhang (a rice brew) before this dance.

5.00 Rupees - Hozagiri
Hozagiri Dance is performed by the people of Reang Community of the state of Tripura. This community is believed to have migrated to Tripura in the mid fifteenth century from somewhere in the hill tracts of Chittagong. The Hozagiri Dance is quite different from other dance forms of the region. The theme of the dance is nearly the same as of that of other tribes. The Hozagiri Dancers practice various kinds of acrobatic skills. They stand on an earthen pitcher and put a bottle with a lighted lamp on it on their head and dance on the rhythm of the music.

6.50 Rupees - Velakali
Velakali is a ritual art (dance) of Kerala a small state in south India, mainly performed at temples in the festival time. The performers, clad in the traditional clothes and colourful headgear of the medieval Nair soldiers, engage in vigorous movements and dexterous sword play, to the accompaniment of an orchestra comprising the maddalam, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal. Velakali originated in Ambalappuzha where Mathoor Panicker, chief of the Chempakasserri army, promoted it to boost the martial spirit of the people. The dance form is a regular feature of the annual festivities at the Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna temple in Alappuzha district.

THE CLOWN

Always a spectacle during carnival celebrations

More commonly referred to as St Kitts, the island of St Christopher has a rich legacy of folk traditions. The language, culinary habits, artistic and recreational pursuits of the large masses of the people might not have had the attention of historians as have the settlement and exploits of the conquerors, but they nevertheless remain a testimony to the creativity, adaptability and endurance of the people of this tiny island.

Along with the Mock Jumby, Masquerades, Mummies and the Bull, to name a few of our traditional folklore groups, the Clowns are part of our folk culture that finds expression at Christmas time in a festival that has been celebrated for hundreds of years. We, in St Kitts, still celebrate what we now term Carnival in December, a series of competitions, shows, and street activities that culminates on New Year's Day when street parades and performances climax in a grand finale. Although Carnival now incorporates masked bands costumed to depict themes universal and local, the true essence of the Kittitian celebration manifests itself in our traditional folklore groups who perform on the street as they have for generations.

The Clown troupe is a somewhat unique phenomena in the English speaking Caribbean and is thought to be a legacy of the renowned French Governor Lonvillier de Poincy, a gentleman who ruled French interests in the Caribbean in the 17th Century and who resided in his Chateau in the hills overlooking Basseterre. It was there he held court and the magnificence of his hospitality and the entertainment he provided were celebrated by visitors to the island.

The characteristic costume of the European court jester is transformed in the Kittitian Clown into a beautiful flowing suit, bellowing as the several dancers execute a series of intricate movements. Performed by the descendants of African slaves who make up vast majority of the population of the island, the sinuous and harmonious body movement of the dancers blend with the String Band rhythms, the musical accompaniment for this particular troupe and the elegance and grace as the dancers as they serpentine behind and between each other is a spectacle to behold. The pink wiremess mask worn as part of the costume, hiding the face of the performer, apparently depicts the European, and is a feature of almost all the local folk dance characters. The sounds of bells and the crack of the Hunter, a leather whip carried by each performer, punctuates the rhythms of the String Band, binding closer the dancers to the musicians.

Early in the century, this troupe began to take on shades of North American culture with the inclusion of Cake Walk and Japanese Girl characters. Performed mainly by men, the groups might have forty (40) to fifty (50) members, some Kittitians remembering times when there were groups eighty (80) strong. There was even a time when little boys longed to get a gift of a clown suit so as to identify with the splendor of he troupes at Christmas time. Men migrating to North America and England took their culture with them and clown troupes have paraded at Labour Day parades in New York, CARIBANA in Toronto and Nottinghill in London.

With the exodus of Kittitians, especially in the 1950's and 60's, this rich cultural expression dwindled as more and more emigrants left to take up residence overseas. Costumed individuals would stalk the streets in vein in search of a clown troupe to join. The ascendancy of the Clown fell as did the lustre of his lustre of first half of this century when this troupe flourished as a major force among the folklore group at Christmas time. As a new appreciation for the rich legacies of our ancestor takes hold, the re-emergence of the Clown troupe could be the symbol of what can be regained and won if we truly wish to look deeply into our heritage and revitalize the legacies of generations past. Christmas 1995 saw the appearance of a clown troupe once again on the streets of Basseterre, when the strains of the String Band and the beauty of the costume gave hope that the Clown had not in truth disappeared but was reawakening from a long slumber. May the restoration of this once vibrant form of our folklore take place and live on for the appreciation and enjoyment of generations to come.

Traditional traders were are important part in the life of humble communities of bygone days.  Goods were scarce and wants were fewer.   The arrivals of these itinerant hawkers were an event most welcomed and their departures lent a promise of hope for new goods on their next visit.  Though their wares were limited these traders somehow managed to fill the needs of the humble and poor who could not afford to patronize stores run by big trading houses which have more to offer.

Since ancient times Cossack troops have fulfilled the function of the border guards, they have always been the main force of military campaigns beyond Eastern and Western borders of the State.
Don Cossacks are the first on seniority and the largest of the Cossack troops of the Russian Empire. The historical name is connected with the River Don (the Azov Sea basin). Don Cossack troop occupies separate territories of the modern Lugansk and Donetsk regions of Ukraine, Rostov, Volgograd and Voronezh regions and the republic of Kalmykia in the Russian Federation.
Kuban Cossacks are the Russian Cossacks of the Northern Caucasus, they occupy the territories of modern Krasnodar region, the western part of the Stavropol Territory, as well as the Republics of Adygea and Karachay-Cherkessia. The troop was officially established in 1860 on the basis of the Black Sea Cossack troop and part of the Caucasian linear Cossack army.
Terek Cossacks are the ethnic group of Cossacks, living along the rivers Terek, Sunzha, Assa, Kura, Malka on the north side of the Caucasus. Headquarters of the Terek Cossack army situates in Vladikavkaz.

Ten of Britain's most powerful post-war fashion designers will be honored by Royal Mail (the British Post Office) on stamps to be issued May 15, 2012.

The 10 Great British Fashion stamps showcase fashions created by Hardy Amies, Norman Hartnell, Granny Takes a Trip, Ossie Clark, Tommy Nutter, Jean Muir, Zandra Rhodes, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith and Alexander McQueen.

All the stamps are nondenominated with a "1st" inscription indicating that they pay the basic first-class domestic rate, currently 60 pence.

The stamps were designed by Johnson Banks using photographs taken by Solve Sundsbo. One representative work of each designer was used.  Some of the notable works include the suit created by Nutter for Ringo Starr of the Beatles.

Senior curator of fashion at London's Victoria and Albert Museum Claire Wilcox assisted in the selection of the fashion houses to be represented on the stamps.

The Great British Fashion set stemmed from the earlier 2009 British Design Classics stamp showing Mary Quant's mini skirt, according to Royal Mail.

Amies is most known for his works created for Queen Elizabeth II.  IN 1955, he was named the official dressmaker for the queen.  He also made the costumes for the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The stamp shows a woman's outfit from the late 1940s.

Hartnell is noted as the dressmaker of the queen's wedding and coronation dresses.  He also created costumes for many films, icluding Katharine Hepburn's wardrobe in the 1959 film Suddenly, Last Summer.  A 1950s era design was used for the stamp.

The boutique Granny Takes a Trip was started in the 1960s by Nigel Waymouth, Sheila Cohen and John Pearse.  Later, Freddie Hornik purchased the shop that operated into the mid-1970s.
The stamp shows a jacket designed by Pearse that uses a Morris & Co. furniture fabric print, Golden Lili, of 1899.  Morris & Co. was honored with British stamps issued May 5, 2011.

Clark's designs were popular in the 1960s and 1970s.  His talent as a designer was noted by the British Vogue magazine in 1965.  The outfit on the stamp uses a print by his wife, Celia Birtwell.

Fashion tailor Nutter recreated the Savile Row suit in the 1960s.  His works include the previously mentioned suit for Starr.  Three of his suits also were worn by the Beatles on the Abbey Road album cover that was pictured on a British stamp in 2007.  Elton John and Mick Jagger were among his other clients.

Dressmaker Muir started as a designer in the 1950s.  In the 1960s, she launched her own label, known for creating timeless feminine clothing that was ready to wear and focused on attention to detail.  An outfit from the late 1970s or early 1980s is shown on the stamp.

One of London's new wave of designers in the 1970s, Rhodes pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion with her dramatic works.  She has designed for Diana, Princess of Wales, and other celebrities, including Freddie Mercury of the band Queen.  The stamp shows a gold dress of the early 1980s from Rhodes' personal collection.

Westwood, known for her punk fashion designs, began designing clothing in the 1970's.  Members of the band the Sex Pistols wore her designs.  The stamp shows a 1993 Harlequin dress that was modeled by Naomi Campbell.

Smith showed his first menswear collection in 1976 in Paris under his own label, and introduced a collection for women in 1993.  He puts a twist on classic designs through the use of loud colors, bright stripes and sharp tailoring.  The stamp shows a men's suit from 2003.

McQueen worked as chief designer at Givency from 1996 to 2001, when he founded his own label.  Eric Wilson and Cathy Horyn wrote in McQueen's obituary in the February 11, 2010, New York Times: "Mr. McQueen often showed a dark streak in his collections, commenting on brutality toward women and what he saw as the inanity of the fashion world, and it carried over into his personal life.
Black Raven, from his 2009 Horn of Plenty collection, is illustrated on the stamp.

Cartor Security Printing of Meauce, France, printed the stamps by offset in sheets of 50 (sold as panes of 25 in most postal outlets).  Each sheet includes five different designs se-tenant (side by side).

The stamps are square, measuring 35 millimeters by 37mm, and perforated gauge 14.5 by 14.

Australia - Colonial Military Uniforms 1985

Colonial Military Uniforms: 
With a sense of derring-do, the young men of Australia drilled to defend the colonies from potential aggressors during the latter decades of the nineteenth century.  In the main, they were volunteers who proudly donned their colourful uniforms on weekends - returning to the daily rounds of civilian life on Monday mornings.  Scores of colonial regiments were formed throughout the country, five of which are represented here: Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillery, Western Australian Pinjarrah Cavalry, New South Wales Lancers, New South Wales Contingent to the Sudan, and Victorian Mounted Rifles. 

The New South Wales Contingent was Australia's first fighting force to serve in an overseas campaign, and this issue of stamps coincides with the centenary of their departure for the Sudan. 

The New South Wales Lancers (then known as the Sydney Light Horse) made its first public appearance in the Sudan Contingent's departure parade.

On April 7, 2012 the post office in Chisinau MD-2012 was issued series of postage stamps "for head coverings and traditional costumes."
Series of postage stamps "for head coverings and traditional costumes" is composed of three stamps and a souvenir sheet and a postage stamp is issued under the Regional Communications Agreement.

Postmark on the nominal value of 85 money is the little corner - cloak traditionally female head.
Postmark on the nominal value of 1.20 lei is the hat (straw) - Head men's traditional cloak.
Postmark on the nominal value of 3 lei is the kerchief - cloak traditionally female head.

The postmark on the souvenir sheet with nominal value of 8.50 lei are the traditional wedding costumes (inc. sec. XX).

A characteristic of this dress is the back part of sleeve which is quite wide in both sides of the belt, wherein the decoration of the wooden sleeve is more apparent, including motifs and filled selected colors such as black, violet red or blue.

One would usually keep a white handkerchief on her head, which is drawn on shoulders with some simple and elegant motifs, closely linked with long sleeves shirt, whose motifs are lovely combined with those of handmade wool socks.

Therefore, taking into account the special valus of this dress and the motif that those be maintained, created and inherited by future generations.

The Court music of Huế is the last heritage of Court music of Vietnam. It carries in itself all elites of the Vietnamese Court musicology, formed and developed for more than thousand years.

It is officially formed with the dynasty foundation from beginning of the XIXe century.  Nevertheless, the first bases had already begun since the XVIIe century under the Nguyễn lords at the time of their conquests in the Đàng Trong (The South of the Vietnam). From the beginning, it carried already in itself kinds, elements and elites of the Đàng Ngoài (the North of the Vietnam) musicology that Đào Duy Từ brought while accompanying lord Nguyễn.
The most prosperous period of the Court music of Huế is between the first half of the XIXe century and the time under king Tự Đức (1848-1883).

Afterwards, it fell in degradation when the French colonizing began their aggressive war. And after the Revolution of August 1945, it totally disappeared with the Vietnamese monarchy.

The years 1947-1948, thanks to mustering Court artists from the king Bảo Đại time of Lady Từ Cung (King Bảo Đại's Mother), some kinds of the Court music are continued.  Under Ngô Đình Diệm, the authority of Saigon financially supported performances of two groups Ba Vũ and Cổ nhạc Đại Nội (Former music of the forbidden Court), representatives of the Vietnam traditional music while welcoming chiefs of State and diplomatic delegations.

Afterwards, group Ba Vũ met financial difficulties, the Court music was threatened to disappear.  The years 80, it recommenced to be interested by the Ministry of Culture and local authorities.  Until the years 90, it entered into the renaissance period.  Certain kinds of Court music were increased one after another, with the foundation of the Traditional Arts Group of Huế and Theater of the traditional Court music of Huế.  So far, this art kind already was introduced in several countries of the world.  Nevertheless, the today Court music of Huế just remains a part of the former one; it is nevertheless a precious heritage, gasoline of knowledge and competence of the Vietnamese art. Therefore,

November 2003, she is recognized by the UNESCO on the list of the intangible and oral heritages of humanity.
